God’s Deliverance in a Demanding World (Genesis 14:17-24)

Group Guides | Sharing the gospel, sharing our lives (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

By way of introduction: What are some of the demands in your life that can feel overwhelming?

Read Genesis 14:17-24

  1. In this scene we see Abram, returning home from battle, victorious against all odds and bringing with him a host of captives set free. Upon his return he is met by two kings. Who are they?

  2. The two kings welcome Abram is starkly contrasting ways. What was different about their welcome? And what was different about Abram’s response?

  3. During Sunday’s sermon, we learned who Melchizedek is from Genesis 14, Psalm 110 and Hebrews 5 - 7 (these are the three places he is mentioned in the Bible). When we utilise all three of these passages, what can we know about Melchizedek?

  4. How does Melchizedek point us to the person and work of Jesus?

  5. Looking at how Abram responded to these kings, how can we see Abram’s faith growing in this passage?

  6. There are many demands on our time, money, energy, heart. Does God lay more demands on us? Does he greet us weary from life’s battles with more demands? Look at how Jesus treats those who are heavy with the demands of life in Matthew 11:28-29.

Pray for our church, that we would worship the one who gives us freedom from demands and gives us himself..
