Joyful Generosity (Philippians 4:14-23)

Group Guides | Sharing the gospel, sharing our lives (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

By way of introduction: How does it feel to receive a generous gift? How might it feel to give with generosity?

Read Philippians 4:14-23

  1. How does the context of Philippians 4:10-13 show us the connection between contentedness and generosity?

  2. Look at the language of 4:14-16 and 1:3-5…

    • what do you notice? and;

    • why do you think is significant about this?

  3. According to 4:17, what is a reason for gospel generosity in our giving of money for gospel ministry? Discuss how this works.

  4. In 4:18, Paul picks up the language from the Old Testament sacrificial and offering system, that particular relates to atonement for sin (and uses it for speaking about how God smells our giving (RPV, Russ-Paraphrase-Version).

    What does that mean? (have a look at Ephesians 5:2 as well)

  5. If God will supply every need (4:19), even as we undertake our giving in gospel-generosity, how does he meet that need?

  6. What will it look like for our church to be a joyful community of gospel generosity?

Pray that we as a church would be a joyful community, living out the joy in Jesus we see from Philippians.
