The Upside-Down Way of Church Culture (1 Corinthians 1:18-31)

Group Guides | Sharing the gospel, sharing our lives (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

By way of introduction: Where do people in our society believe power for changing societal culture is?

Read 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

  1. Discuss why this particular section, penned by Paul, was written in its original context.

  2. How would you explain to someone who was new to the Christian faith, what ‘the word of the cross’ is.

  3. What does Paul mean, in verse 25, that the foolishness of God is wiser than men?

  4. As a group, let’s do what verse 26 asks us to do, and consider our calling. Describe what sort of person you were when you were called into Christ, and how you can now boast in the Lord.

  5. In what ways are Christians today tempted to rely on wisdom and signs as opposed to the gospel?

  6. How does the word of the cross change how we view ourselves?

  7. What does the word of the cross do to shape how we view church and shape our church culture?

Pray that we would have a culture of Christ in us as believers, in our households and in our church. Pray that we truly would be reforming by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pray for one another.
