By way of introduction: What are you passionate about, and why do you feel that about your passion?

Read John 2:13-25

1. Why is Jesus in the Temple on that particular day, and what does he find happening there?

2. We know from Deuteronomy 14:22-27 that there is provision for long distance worshippers to purchase things needed for worship, and even to change currency would have been helpful for such people. So what does Jesus particularly have an issue with here?

3. As the disciples make sense of this moment, what do they remember is written in the Scriptures (Psalm 69:9)?

   a. Who wrote originally wrote those words, and what did they mean in context?

   b. How do these words make sense of how Jesus feels and what he is doing here?

4. The Jews’ reaction is also one of making sense of this moment. What do you notice about:

   a. Their request for a “sign” (remember what we’re seeing in John’s Gospel)

   b. Jesus’ answer about a sign

5. After this scene we see Jesus continues to be in Jerusalem for the Passover Feast, and many people believed in his name. Why?

6. We see in verse 24 that Jesus didn’t entrust (literally “believe”) in them such belief yet, why?

7. Later the disciples also remembered Jesus’ words about him being raised from the dead (verse 22), and they believed ‘the Scripture and the word that Jesus has spoken’. What does this whole scene show us about who Jesus is and what he comes to do in our own lives?

8. We can be passionate about many things, so how does this passage help shape our passions in gathered and sent worship?
