Meeting Christ in Community (John 1:35-51)

31st January, 2022

Group Guides

By way of introduction: As we begin getting together as a Group this year, why do you think Reforming Groups exist?

Read John 1:35-51

  1. For some context, throughout the second half of John 1 we hear John the Baptist call out and say: “Behold the Lamb of God!”. In John 1:29, what does he also say that explains this title?

  2. So when John’s disciples hear this about Jesus, and they start following him, what does their brief conversation in verses 38-39 show us about how Jesus relates to people?

  3. What pattern of relationships do we see start forming then in verses 40-42 and in verses 43-45?

  4. As this all happens, what is the tone and tension we see in Nathanael’s answer to Philip? How do people reply with similar skeptical questions today?

  5. How is Philip’s answer to Nathanael’s abrupt question encouraging and equipping for us?

  6. If you could summarise our church’s mission-vision-values statement that Jesus gives us in the great commandment and the great commission (see the front page of our website), it could be:

    Christ | Community | Commission

So from this study, how does community play an important role in discipleship of Christ?

  7. In what ways could we plan and pray for “come and see” to be at the heart of how we relate as a Group, and as Reforming Church?

Pray for one another and our church.
