God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! (John 14)

Group Guides | Sharing the gospel, sharing our lives (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

By way of introduction: What are examples of things that humanity “believes in”, which are beyond our comprehensive mental grasp?

Read John 14:1-6

  1. From the context of John’s Gospel thus far, discuss what references we see to Jesus’ deity and humanity.

  2. What difference, do you think, does Jesus’ “I AM” statement in John 14:6 make for troubled hearts?

    Read John 14:7-14

  3. Discuss what it means that in the words of Jesus, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father”.

    Read John 14:15-31

  4. When we see how God relates to us as believers, we are shown some extraordinary things. What do you think are the implications for the church, from John 14:22-23?

  5. The title for this Group Guide comes from the hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy”. Over the centuries since Jesus said this word on God, the doctrine of the Trinity has been debated, councils have been convened, and creeds formed to carefully contain statements on what we believe about God.

Read through this hymn and see where the words in song connect with God’s word in John 14.

Now read through the Nicene Creed, and discuss how the language carefully captures what the Christian church has believed for centuries.

6. Whilst we are limited in having a comprehensive mental grasp on the inner life of the Trinity, what real differences knowing the Triune God make to our life?

Pray that our doctrine would lead to devotion, in Jesus’ name.
