He led a host of captives (Genesis 14:1-16)

Group Guides | Sharing the gospel, sharing our lives (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

By way of introduction: When we think of the word ‘captive’, what comes to mind?

Read Genesis 14:1-16

  1. We saw on Sunday a geopolitical conflict that leads to the captivity of Lot, Abram’s nephew. What circumstances leading up to this point had led to Lot being taken captive?

  2. What are Abram’s options, when we read verse 13?

  3. Abram does what no other king or coalition can do, showing he is the real king of Canaan. How does Abram point to Jesus here?

  4. We can so easily be like Lot, who although is righteous by faith (2 Peter 2:7) is also like us in that even Christians can track away from trusting in the Lord. What are the circumstances that lead to Christians becoming captive to our own foolishness and sin?

  5. From this episode in Genesis, through Psalm 68 (especially v.18) and onto Ephesians 4:8, discuss how we comprehend what Jesus has done for us as revealed in the gospel.

  6. How will knowing that we are liberated to be led as a host of captives in Jesus’ train, shape our church life and ministry in the world?

Pray for our church, that we would have the strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the extent of Christ’s love that frees us from our captivity to sin.
