Light in Darkness (John 8:12-59)

4th April, 2022

Group Guides | Sharing the gospel, sharing our lives

(1 Thessalonians 2:8)

By way of introduction: Where does our world use metaphors of light and darkness?

Read John 8:12-59

  1. Jesus has seven “I AM” statements that are all in John’s Gospel, here we see in 8:12 the second of them (see John 6:35, 41, 48, 51 and John 10:7, 9, 11, 14 and John 11:25 and John 14:6 and John 15:1, 5). Discuss what sort of light is Jesus and what does Jesus do for us as the light?

  2. Read carefully John 8:28-30, and talk through why people will know that Jesus is who he says he is “when they have lifted up the Son of Man.”

  3. As you read John 8:34-35, discuss what it means it practice to be a “slave of sin.”

  4. How does Jesus free us from the darkness and slavery of sin? (John 8:31-32)

  5. According to Jesus here, what does discipleship look like? What will it mean for us in practice?

Pray for our church family and friends, that we would abide in Jesus’ word.
