The Secret Killer of Our Society (Genesis 4)

Group Guides | Sharing the gospel, sharing our lives (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

By way of introduction: What makes sibling rivalry so surprising and yet so common?

Read Genesis 4

  1. When we look at the unravelling of Cain’s life, it starts with the two brother’s offerings. It can be tricky to work out what is going on here, yet it’s very helpful that we know “Scripture interprets Scripture”. How does Hebrews 11:4 help us know the difference in the offerings of Cain and Abel?

  2. How does the LORD describe the danger of sin for Cain, and what does that mean?

  3. What are some common “crouching sins” for us?

  4. After Cain murders Abel,

    • what things concern Cain the most, and what does this reveal about his heart? (see also 2 Corinthians 7:10)

    • discuss and describe how the LORD responds to Cain’s sin.

  5. As Lamech takes two wives, and then speaks to them of his way of life, discuss what sort of household culture are we seeing here.

  6. Compare Genesis 4:24 and Matthew 18:21-22, what does Scripture show us in this comparison?

  7. Look carefully at Genesis 4:1, 4:26 along with Genesis 3:15.

    • What does Eve say at the birth of her sons that shows she holds hope for the future in the middle of the mess of sin and death?

    • How does Genesis 4 show us Jesus (see also Hebrews 12:24)?

  8. Cain says, “my punishment is greater than I can bear” (Genesis 4:13). We could say that too, yet how does Christ answer our cry?

Let’s pray in response to God’s grace to us, in Jesus name.
